New York Airports Disable/Special Needs Information
Accessible services for passengers
with disabilities
Customers with disabilities are advised that elevator service
is available at seven of PATH's thirteen stations. These
stations include five terminals - 33rd Street and the temporary
World Trade Center Station in New York, Journal Square,
Hoboken and Newark in New Jersey as well as Exchange Place
and Pavonia/Newport Station in New Jersey.
PATH's Accessible Features
Here is a brief description of some of the features, which
have been installed or improved in these PATH stations.
* Curb Ramps - are located near the entrances
to these stations to provide easier access inside and outside
these stations.
* Ramps - have been constructed or improved for easier access
inside and outside these stations.
* Elevators - self-operated elevators have been installed
or modified in each of these stations. Standard raised symbols
are located on the control panel next to the button for
the alarm bell, main exit level, door open, door close and
emergency stop.
* Escalators - stations at Exchange Place, Journal Square
and Newark are equipped with escalators that connect PATH
platforms to the street level. Pavonia/Newport and 33rd
Street have partial escalator service.
* Stairs - textured rubber strips indicate the beginning
of a staircase. Stair edges are specially sloped and shaped
for easier travel and handrails are now easier to grasp.
* Signs - access route signs to PATH platforms are located
at each of the five stations. All new signs have been designed
to provide maximum visibility.
* Fare Gates - special wheelchair fare entry gates are available.
All turnstiles accept full-fare, pay-per-ride MetroCards.
Payment of fare unlocks the gate for your entry. The release
button unlocks the gate when you exit.
* Closed Circuit TV - cameras are mounted outside the elevator
and in other areas of these PATH stations.
* Platforms - the edges of station platforms are clearly
highlighted with rubber or ceramic tactile edges. The gaps
between the train and platform meet the standard for wheelchair
accessibility. In most stations, departing signs flash on
and off indicating when trains are ready to leave.
* Passenger INFO Phones - are prominently located in these
PATH stations. Some have been lowered and fitted with volume
controls including all those located next to the elevators.
If you require assistance, just pick up any of these phones
and you will automatically be connected to an information
agent, 24 hours a day.
* Public Telephones - are available in some PATH stations.
Various telephones have been lowered and equipped with volume
controls.
* Public Address Systems will provide improved audibility
through the use of fiber optic cables.
* Audible Signals and Flashing Lights - are located at the
exits of these stations and will be activated in an emergency.
* Parking - a limited number of close-in parking spaces
are designated for people with disabilities at a privately
owned parking facility in the Journal Square Transportation
Center. A handicapped license plate or placard must be visibly
displayed. For parking information, please call 201-216-6753.
HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE SERVICES
New audio and visual paging systems help travelers to
locate companions waiting for them in the Terminal.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal also provides a
Wheelchair Escort Service for travelers who may have
difficulty navigating their way through the facility. There
is
no charge for the service. Simply dial “54”
on any
in-house telephone to request an escort. The restaurants
and restrooms at the Port Authority Bus Terminal are
accessible, as are the unisex hair salon, bank, pharmacy
and other retail establishments at the facility.
BUS GATES MODIFICATIONS
To meet the needs of bus travelers who require the use
of wheelchairs, The Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey is pleased to report that 113 bus gates are being
modified. This project will be completed within 2 years.
These changes will enable more lift-equipped buses to
use the Bus Terminal. In the interim, bus drivers*
discharge travelers with disabilities at pre-determined
locations that are in close proximity to the elevators.
Although The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
operates the Port Authority Bus Terminal, it does not
operate buses. Note that the information provided pertains
only to the services available inside the Bus Terminal.
